WEEK 5: SKILLS AND WORKSHOP SESSIONS

For this blog post, I will be sharing what I have learnt this week during the skills and workshop sessions and how the skills can be applied in the development of my chosen project this term.

During this session, we learnt about the different and common materials used for modelling in my field of studies, materials such as; plywood, cardboard, mount board, foam board, grey board, acetate, and tracing paper. These materials are the most common, they are easy to use and acquire which makes them the chosen model-making materials for students.

For this session, we had a task to practice using mount board, foam board, and grey board to get a feel for the first time on how the materials are, how easy or difficult they are to handle (cut through or score), and how useful they may or may not be for the project we will be doing

Firstly, we were given a 20cm piece of mount board to make a square or box shape out of it, we did this by dividing the 20cm piece into four equal parts of  5cm, and after that, we scored the points where we marked by cutting the mount board but not cutting all the way through. Secondly, we were given another piece of mount board, but this time we needed to make an arc by also scoring at every 1cm mark so that it could become bendable. Lastly, for the testing task, we tested the foam board by also cutting through it to get a feel of it, and it was easy to cut, we also did something similar to scoring but for this material, we cut a tiny piece out to get that bending effect.

On completion of the practice/testing stage, we move to making a house using already provided dimensions. The material used for the walls of the house was the mount board, while the materials used for the roofing and base was the grey board, the mount board was a bit thick and difficult to cut through, especially for the windows and door, but I was able to complete it neatly

For my project, the materials that would be used are not yet confirmed, which is why as a follow-up to this post, I will post about my research on the materials and sustainability of my project,
