As a follow-up to the previous post about the research of materials and sustainability, I am going to be doing further research on the location and the site analysis of my children's hospital project. In this post, I will be showing the location of my project and discussing the reason for choosing this location for my project.
After some research for a suitable and conducive location for a children's hospital, with the help of my tutor, I was able to discover that there is a location in London that had a children's hospital years ago but it was shut down and now this particular location lacks a children's hospital.
In East London, there is a place named Hackney, and it had a children's hospital named "The Queen Elizabeth Hospitals for Children", the hospital was founded in 1867 and as time went on developed branches in other areas, in 1997 the hospital was shut down when the NHS took over and most of its services transferred to The Royal London Hospital
Based on this incident, Hackney no longer has a children's hospital which appeared as a great opportunity for me to choose Hackney as a great place to construct a brand new children's hospital. I began searching for brownfield sites in Hackney that would be suitable for my design concept. Brinkley and Woodfield, (2021) stated that one of the benefits of building on a brownfield site is that planning permission can be easier to obtain on an area that has already been built on previously, as opposed to land which has not.
The location of the chosen site for my Children's hospital project is a brownfield site in Rothbury Road, Hackney, London.
This site is surrounded by other brownfield sites, apartment buildings, and factory-like buildings, not far from the site across the A12 is the massive Victoria Park, and the Hackney Wick underground station is also close to the site which makes transportation to and from this site reasonable.
The measured distance of this site was taken using Google Maps and it shows some dimensions of a total distance of 313.17m (1,027.47 ft), and a total area of 5,186.86m2 (55,830.94 ft2)
Researching further on the natural and physical features of the site, I focused on the topography of the site using a topography UK topographic map, the elevation of the site is 8m while the maximum elevation and the minimum elevation are 18m and 3m respectively.
The image above shows the traffic around the chosen site, with green meaning fast and red meaning slow.
This shows that the site has a smooth flow of traffic and can ensure the smooth movement of people to and from this site.
As for accessibility, people can easily commute from Essex, and other areas which the A12 leads to.
"It provides the main south-west/north-east route through Essex and Suffolk, connecting Ipswich to London and the M25" (National Highways, 2020).
Following this post, I will do a brief research on the demographics of this location and how it will be profitable for my project

ReplyDeleteExamine your figures more - if the main age range is 25-34, also a significant amount in the next age bracket, what do a lot of couples do at that time? They have children.... Therefore further justifying the presence of your hospital. It is important that you understand this.
